April showers bring May hours to Tompkins County farmers markets

A couple of days of rain to end the month of April will give way just in time for May to begin with expanded hours for local farmers markets in Ithaca and around Tompkins County.

The Ithaca Farmers Market returned to Steamboat Landing for Saturdays in April, and they expand this week to Wednesdays on East Hill as well as Sundays at the market pavilion at Steamboat Landing.

Also this week is the return outdoors of the Trumansburg Farmers Market, after a winter indoors at the American Legion just north of the village on Route 96. The Trumansburg market is every Wednesday from 4-7, May through October, at the corner of Route 96 and 227.

To the east, the Freeville Farmers Market is back for the season this week, a “friendly, hyperlocal market” every Sunday from 11:30am-2:30pm from May through October in front of the Freeville Elementary School at 43 Main Street in downtown Freeville.

Of course there’s fresh seasonal fruits, vegetables, and local eggs, dairy, and meats at the farmers markets. Local wine, beer, and cider, too. But we love them for the prepared food opportunities as well.

The Trumansburg Farmers Market on Wednesdays features a rotating cast that includes our friends from Kiely’s Cooking, On the Street Pita, Silo, and Simply Red. It’s easy walking distance from everywhere in the village, and there’s parking not far away.

The afternoon Ithaca Farmers Market on Wednesdays is next to Walgreens from 3-6, with a slightly different set of vendors each week, and we’ve heard Old Chatham Creamery and Bluebird Bakery will be there for the inaugural Wednesday market this week, and Osakaya is likely to be there with Japanese fare.

The Sunday market at Steamboat Landing is from 10am-3pm through October, then 10-2 in November. Parking’s easy around the Wednesday market or across the street at East Hill Plaza, and it’s a little less crowded on Sundays at Steamboat Landing.
